"A Country Gentleman of the Nineteenth Century: being a short memoir of the Right Honourable, Sir William Heathcote, Bart., of Hursley. 1801-1881", was how John Awdry (ancestor of the Rev. Awdry of Thomas the Tank Engine fame) titled his biography of his friend and neighbour. In many ways it sums up Sir William Heathcote, the 5th Baronet of Hursley 1825-1881.
Sir William was the very epitome of the Victorian gentleman and under his tenure Hursley Park became the very model of what a nineteenth centry estate should be.
